Using NACS connectors for Tesla and other NACS connector vehicles

Tesla Charger Plug NACS

NACS connectors offer new options for electric vehicle drivers in North America. ELNexus has begun including these connectors in our lineup of Level 2 and DC fast charging stations , expanding access to convenient charging solutions and helping drivers stay on the road.

Charging with NACS Level 2

We ensure compatibility of our Level 2 charging stations with all Tesla electric vehicles , which means you will have no compatibility issues for everyday charging at home or at work.

NACS charging at DC fast charging stations

For Tesla drivers using DC fast charging stations , there is now an option to upgrade their vehicles to be NACS compatible. In this post, we will look at compatibility and the steps you should take if retrofitting is necessary.

Why does NACS matter?

The North American Charging Standard (NACS) began as a proprietary connector from Tesla , designed for its vehicles and charging networks. In November 2022, Tesla opened the design and specifications for use by other electric vehicle and charging station manufacturers, paving the way for broader industry collaboration.

In 2023, more and more automakers announced that they would include NACS ports in their new models, which will lead to an increase in the number of NACS-compatible charging stations in 2025 and beyond.

Tesla Compatibility Check

If you own a Tesla , vehicles manufactured before 2022 may not have the communication required to use NACS DC charging stations. This may result in a situation where you are unable to initiate charging at a NACS station.

Before you find yourself in such a situation, check if your car is ready to charge at NACS DC charging stations. To do this, go to the car menu:

Software → Additional vehicle information

Look for the option "CCS and NACS DC loading from third parties" which will show a status as "Enabled" or "Not installed".

  • If the status is "Activated", you are ready to connect and start charging.
  • If the status is "Not Installed", Tesla offers a hardware upgrade through retrofitting that will allow proper communication with NACS DC chargers.

This upgrade includes a Tesla CCS Combo 1 adapter, which is provided during a service visit.

Charging with NACS at ELNexus stations

Once your Tesla supports NACS DC charging, simply connect the ELNexus NACS connector and follow the on-screen instructions at the charging station. No additional adapters are required at stations equipped with a dedicated NACS connector.

We are here to help.
